31 May 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 31st May [1891]. I went to church in the morning at the extinguisher steeple church in Langham Place. Count Hatzfeldt came to lunch & brought Henry from the Emperor William of Germany the order “pour le merite” for literature & Fine Arts. After lunch Nelly came to see me & we went together to see Lady S. Palmer whom we happily found at home. She was full of the misfortune wh had befallen them. Their butler had fallen ill of influenza & last Thursday night had become raving mad. She was called up in the night & had to call in 2 policemen to take charge of him—got the Dr & he was taken away. It appears he was driven from hospital to hospital & none cd take him it—it being against the rules to take in madmen– At last at the workhouse they said they would take him if they went & got the proper order—& they had again to drive off & get it—after abt 2 hours the wretched man was disposed of. I came home to tea– Little Bertie Ponsonby came to tea with me– Also Mrs Henry White & her sister Miss Mackintosh & later Mr & Mrs Felix Moscheles—then Maria with her Nela & Ruth. We dined alone & looked over some of Mrs Austen’s books of prints. Henry having subscribed £2.2 to the New Gallery got 50 tickets for going there on Sunday– It was opened for the 1st time today & he went & gave several tickets away also.
