8 June 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 8th June [1891]. I sent to ask Signor Smargiassi to come & explain the use of the German colours for fan painting & he came at 12.30 & remained to luncheon. Afterwards Henry & I drove left cards & shopped. The great topic of the day is the baccarat scandal case now going on. Whether or not Sir Wm Gordon Cumming is guilty of cheating at cards. Whilst playing at the house of a certain Mr & Mrs Wilson of Tanby Hall with the Prince of Wales. The Prince & his friends got Sir Wm to sign a paper to say he would never play cards again on condition they would not show him up. The secret having oozed out Sir Wm denies having cheated & says he was compelled to sign the paper. It comes out that the Prince insisted on Baccarat being played—held the bank & carries about his own counters. This causes immense scandal & indignation. There is a very strong feeling. The case have been going on some time & is to be over today or tomorrow. After tea I went out on foot with Nela who came in as I was going out to do a little shopping & went in to see Blanche at No 17. Dined at home & wrote a lot of letters in the evening.
