9 June 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 9th June [1891]. Rather headache when I woke so breakfasted in bed. Tried to use fan paints not very successfully. Miss Emily Maxwell came to lunch– Henry went down to the meeting at the National Gallery. I went to the Exhibition of the Recreation classes at the National School Marylebone. Found Princess Louise opening it & speeches going on. I bought a small thing at Nellie Lindsays stall & then returned home. Sir Francis & Lady Aleton came to tea & later my sister Blanche & Eliza White & her girl—& Nela Du Cane. Henry brought the news that Sir Wm Gordon Cumming has lost his suit– It appears he is engaged to marry an American girl with £20,000 a year a Miss Garner. What will happen to him now? Will he be turned out of the army. The Wilson family were hooted on leaving the court. They are more unpopular than Sir Wm. Henry & I dined with Sir Henry & Lady Thompson—& met Sir Spencer Wells & his daughter, 2 Miss Lawrences (sisters of Sir Trevor) who were great friends of the Brownings & we talked much of him. Also a Professor & Mrs W.                & others– Much talk over the Baccarat case– A facetious tobacconist advertises “Where do you get your Baccar-at? Why at Wilson’s of course”–
