5 August 1891 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Wednesday. 5th August [1891]. I breakfasted in bed, Got up by 11. Went to Mr Clark’s room & had a talk with him & he gave me a long account of my father’s family. How it originally came from Shropshire & when the Lewis family had found iron & coal at Dowlais & wanted a good manager they got my grandfather to come– He gradually grew rich & got the shares into his own hands. I painted flowers a little till luncheon– At 3.30 I drove with Blanche & Miss Lewis to a lawn tennis party given by a Mrs Franklin at St Hilary. Luckily it kept fine. Of course I knew no one there but was introduced to a Mrs Corbett an Australian lady lately settled in the neighbourhood & she was very pleasant. We had tea & set off home abt 6. Mr Martin the Manager of the Dowlais works came today & I sat next him at dinner. He is very pleasant & well informed. He & Blanche & Miss Lewis & I played a game of crazy Halma in eveng while Henry & Mr Clark played backgammon.
