6 August 1891 — Talygarn, nr. Llantrisant, Glamorgan
Thursday. 6th August [1891]. Mr Martin left after breakfast & returned to Dowlais. I sat in the drawing room with Blanche & worked—then went up to my room & painted flowers. Lunch at 1.30. Played croquet with Blanche & walked in the garden till tea. Sat with her & Miss Lewis in her sitting room & played the guitar & sang. She showed me the photo: of her fiancé a little dark man Clarence Walker. She said he was small & delicate but she preferred this as there was then more likelihood of her going abroad– She said he had nothing of his own—(she has £80,000) & when she announced her engagement to her father she had expected great opposition on that acct. But she supposed that this was counteracted by the good connection. She was evidently disappointed at her father’s quiet acceptance of the fact—& said at least he might have paid her the compliment to say he would miss her. I did not tell her her father had said it was a great relief to him—but I said I was sure he wd miss her for I knew he has been telling Henry lately that he was greatly bothered as to how he should arrange his life when she was gone. I fear the marriage does not promise well.
