21 August 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 21st August [1891]. I got up late & then walked out with Henry. Very showery. We went to Bond St to buy a tall lamp for a present to Mr Malcolm & then on to Edwards & Jones for other presents. When we got back we found Mrs Rate sitting waiting for us having come up from Dorking. Then Alice & Hallam came. Sir Henry Thompson also called as he was passing thro’ town. The Murrays & Alice Rate lunched with us, & then she & I took a walk & did some shopping. In Piccadilly we parted—she returned to Dorking & I took a hansom home. Alice came to tea & then returned home to Wimbledon. Mr Robert Murray came to speak to us abt Annie & Mr Cole & engaged them—she as cook—he as 2nd gardener for wh I am very glad. I think all parties are fortunate—but I am sorry to think Annie has now quite left us. Mrs Henry White & Miss Macmillan came to a farewell tea with me– Mr Herbert Herring called to see Henry & bid us good bye. I finished the packing– Mama, Sir Frederick Burton & Mr Alfred Burton dined with us. Henry had a slight chill & I feared he was going to be ill– They all left early & we went to bed.
