24 August 1891 — Lucerne
Monday. 24th August [1891]. Left by the early train for Lausanne. Got up at 6.30– Being close to the station we had plenty of time for 7.50 train. It was showery. We had to change at Berne. Got to Lausanne by lunch time & went to Hotel Gibbon– After lunch we took a walk in the town—then to the celebrated antiquity shop Mme Baud recommended us by Ivor & Mr Clark where they had bought a lot of things last year. Found there a handsome old ebony & ivory guitar of which Henry kindly made me a present. Went on for a walk up the wooden stairs which lead to the cathedral & went in & Henry showed me the monument put by Lord Stratford de Redcliffe to his 1st wife. He said that at Consple when he was a young man Lord Stratford used often to talk to him about her– She died at the birth of her child after a year’s marriage. We luckily found a cab for hire when we came out of the church & so we drove back to the hotel round the town– We dined at the table d’hôte. I got out the Halma board & began to teach Henry to play the game. Rosa returned abt 10 having been a couple of hours with her sister here.
