25 August 1891 — Lausanne
Tuesday. 25th August [1891]. Called at 7 & left for Brieg by early train. The weather quite lovely. A widow English lady was in the same carriage with us & had with her a boy abt 15—very tall thin & delicate looking. She was pleasant—& we interchanged courtesies. There were also 2 Swiss ladies. They all left us at Visp for Zermatt. We reached Brieg at 12.30 went to Hotel 3 Couronnes et Poste. Had lunch & then walked to Gliss to look at the bone house which he remembered when he was quite a little boy abt 3 or 4 years old. His parents stayed there on their 1st return from Italy & he remembers his father bet the nurse a small sum that she would not go at night from the hotel to the church opposite & bring back a skull from the bone house. He remembers that “Ann” did it & said she did not fear dead men—& so won her money– Henry also remembers that he played spillikins on a deal table then in the corner room. Played patience—& Halma– Dined at table d’hôte.
