26 August 1891 — Brieg
Wednesday. 26th August [1891]. Called at 7 & at ¼ 8 started to drive over the Simplon. Splendid weather. We had a roomy carriage & 4 horses– Splendid views of the Bel Alp & Aletsch glaciers till nearly the top– There was a coldish wind when we turned the Monte Leone. We reached the inn at the top abt 12 & lunched. There a noisy jolly party of Italians at their lunch screaming Piemontese at the top of their voices. Henry & I walked on after lunch a little way & the carriage with Rosa started at 2 & overtook us & we got in & pursued our journey. At the frontier Isella we had no difficulty as Henry had an old “Lascia passare” & nothing was opened. The drive in Italy was beautiful. The hay was every where being made. The women carrying huge loads of hay on their backs—all busy & smiling. We reached Domo Dossola abt 6 & went to the Poste. Dined at table d’hôte. The town & hotel was lighted with electricity—& the light went out in the middle of dinner to the great amusement of the company. Lamps were lighted. Next to Henry sat a nice young Italian & he & Henry had some talk. He turned out to be a Visconti. We played Halma in eveng.
