1 September 1891 — Baveno
Tuesday. 1st September [1891]. Splendid weather. We breakfasted at 7.30 & at 8 drove off to Ponte Grande in an open landau. We went as far as Vogogna on the old Domodossola road & then turned off into the gorge along a steep but beautiful road. The hill sides are covered with trees—chestnuts, wallnuts &c & the whole population was out haymaking. As we wound up a narrow road—sometimes thro’ tunnels in the rock we left the torrent deeper & deeper beneath us. We reached Ponte Grande at 12 & went into the empty inn there & got some lunch which was not particularly good– Then we wandered about on the hill & went & sat in the shade on rocks in the bed of the torrent & so whiled away the time till 4 oclock. There was not a cloud on Monte Rosa—wh majestically headed the valley. Henry had been here before & searching thro’ the old hotel book we found his signature under the date 20 Aug 1866. He had been here with Judge Keogh whose name was also there. They had come from Macugnaga– We did not attempt to go on there—but at 4 set out to return to Baveno. We got a cup of coffee at the little village of                & there left the Val Anzasca & got onto the high road– It was 8 oclock & quite dark when we reached Baveno & we had a good appetite for our dinner.
