2 September 1891 — Baveno
Wednesday. 2nd September [1891]. We took the 10 o’clock boat & went to Belgirate to pay a visit to Countess Elena Cairoli widow of the statesman. It was a lovely day & we spent a pleasant hour on the steamer. Mme Cairoli met us at the landing place & greeted us also a fellow passenger who turned out to be going to stay with her Signor Falckner. He had married a Miss Hall at Florence & his father in law owned the La Cava mines so he knew the Sloanes & all Henry’s old Florence friends. Mme Cairoli was dressed in a long sort of toga of purple merino over a white silk shirt—a rather fanciful costume for a stout person– She was looking very well & said she had grown thinner as she had been making Alpine excursions & ascents. She was pleased to see us & made us very welcome. We sat talking in her cool darkened drawing room on the ground floor till 12 when she gave us an excellent Italian breakfast. After coffee we went out to the garden behind the house & there sat in a little grove & talked. Later a Deputato Tommas Crudeli with his son & daughter came to call on her– They are staying at the Grand Hotel at Baveno & came by steamer. We all returned together by the 4 o’clock steamer.
