3 September 1891 — Baveno
Thursday. 3rd September [1891]. Spent the morning writing, painting sprigs of oleander– Practised guitar. Lunch at 1. Started at 6 to go to the Grand Hotel to see Mrs Henfrey. Henry having letters to write turned back & I went on alone– Met Mrs Henfrey on the road & walked with her. I sat with her in her little sitting room till 7.30 & she poured forth her heart to me about her sorrow telling me all her husband’s illness—it was nearly dark when I came away & I found Henry impatient to have me back for dinner. Poor Mrs Henfrey’s grief was very touching but she seems to live in the wish to do good to the sick.
