5 September 1891 — Baveno
Saturday. 5th [September 1891]. All the morning painting a bouquet of flowers which was moderately successful. After lunch returned to it. Played Halma with Henry in the afternoon as he thinks it makes him dream of it playing after dinner. At 5 it began to rain but I trudged off to the Chapel at the Villa Clara to attend the choir practise. It became very dark & rained hard. I was to go on to Mrs Henfrey but she sent a man to the chapel to beg me to come tomorrow instead—& I nothing lothe came back to our hotel & practised guitar. A tremendous thunderstorm came on—sheets of rain incessant thunder & lightening which lasted for an hour. We went down to our dinner at 7.30. We were able to sit on the terrace for our coffee but it was raining all the time. The steamers were very late & the Milan one came just as we were going upstairs. We met Count Seckendorff & his friend the Empress architect Herr Ihne just arrived. After they had dined they came up to our rooms & sat talking. They had been at Venice, Milan & Turin & are now returning over the Simplon to Hamburg. It was just 12 when they went to bed–
