4 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 4th [October 1891]. Pouring all day. We all went to 10.30 service. The Bishop preached– He & I & Mrs Sandford went again to the 3.30 service. Mme Hurtado & Idita, Ida Belmondo, Mr & Mrs Felix Moscheles & Mr Woods called at tea time. At 6.30 the Bishop, Mrs S. & I went to the service at the Sailor’s Institute. Being such a wet night only 6 sailors turned up. The lay missioner Mr Hanson led the singing with a tremendous voice. The Bishop gave an excellent address on Courage—personal & moral. We brought Mr Hodgson back with us to dinner wh we had at 8.30. To bed early. There is great excitement in the country at the behaviour of certain French pilgrims at Rome who spat on Victor Emanuel’s tomb & were arrested– The populace rose at once & nearly murdered them & the troops & police had to come out. In every town there were denunciations in favor of the King—& here at the theatre last night there was much excitement & playing of the Royal March & Garibaldi’s hymn.
