7 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [October 1891]. Henry took the Bishop & Mrs S. to see the Miracoli church but was not able to go till past 11 as our gondolier had gone to fetch from the builder our new gondola which we hire by the year & wh he has just made on purpose for us. At 1 we all 4 went to lunch at Palazzo Rezzonico with the Brownings. There was only her pretty cousins Mrs & Miss Schlesinger besides themselves & Miss Browning. Afterwards Henry went home to entertain a Miss Hertz who was to come to see our pictures & to arrange about paying for publishing Miss Ffoulkes’ translation of Morelli’s last book on art. I went with Mrs Sandford to Henrietta Montalba’s studio to see the life size figure she has just modelled—a nude boy leaning over a rock to catch a crab. It is very pretty & very cleverly done—& is her first attempt at the entire figure. It is not yet quite finished. We joined the Bishop at St Mark’s church after we left the studio. The Palla d’oro was exposed for view & we were fortunate to see it. There was a christening going on wh we saw & got into the Baptistery. I took Charles Dickens’ telescope to Ponti to have it put in order. It has laid by many years. It was given to Henry by Miss Hogarth after Dickens death as a memento of him as it always stood on the table in his little chalet. We came home to tea at 5 & Mrs Eden, Mr & Mrs Curtis & the Bentivoglios called. I read aloud to Henry fm a book lent us by Mr Curtis Whitelocke Swedish Embassy till dinner & as the Sandfords went early to bed I read again to Henry before bedtime.
