8 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 8th October [1891]. There was a white fog when we got up which cleared in the morning but in afternoon it rained. I began to work at the portrait of myself which I had tried before I went away to London this summer. The Bishop & Mrs Sandford left us after luncheon & went to Trieste & eventually go to Athens, Bucharest, Consple on his diocesan tour– Mr Hodgson being at the station Henry having been to see the Bishop off Henry brought him here in the gondola & he & I had a talk over church matters & I find him very moderate church– Went out at 5 with Henry in gondola—called on Mrs Bronson & had tea with her—met Mme Hurtado & Clara & Hilda Montalba there. Took the latter to their home as it was still raining & then went home & read Whitelocke aloud to Henry. Dined at 7 & went to the Goldoni Theatre to see Crespino e la Comare—an opera bouffe by Ricci capitally given. The Edens were there in a box & I went & paid them a visit in their box.
