9 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th [October 1891]. Worked hard at my portrait. Mr & Mrs George Howe came to lunch & went up to see my studio afterwards. Abt 3.15 Henry & I started in sandolo for the Lido. I read Whitelock to him on the way there & back. On landing at Lido we met Mr Brown who says he returned yesterday from a small Swiss village where he has been the last 2 months writing his popular History of Venice & has already got through half of it. Wrote to Mrs Burr before dinner & read aloud to Henry in evening while he played patience. Dr Cini came to visit me this morning & gave me some medicine to stop some violent cholics I have been lately subject to. I am to continue this remedy for a month.
