12 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th October [1891]. Painted my portrait. Css Adele Michiel, Rita & Max came to lunch with us & we had a little lesson of shorthand together after neither of us had looked at it since we were at Longarone together. Henry & I went to the Public Gardens in sandolo—got out & took a walk. Saw that the new wall for the island of S. Elena was done & only a bridge wanting to make it communicate with the gardens. We paid a visit to the poor little elephant wh is kept there & was brought by the D. of Genoa. It was a splendid day when we set out but the clouds gathered & the weather looked like changing & in the evening it rained heavily. Mrs G. Edgecumbe came to tea & was very charming. Sr Trombini called. Read aloud to Henry before & after dinner.
