14 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Wednesday. 14th October [1891]. Began to draw my own portrait afresh. Visit from Mr Hodgson to tell us abt the death of Capt. Haselwood Capt of the P&O Hydaspes. He died of rheumatism & heart between here & Brindisi last week. Is to be buried here on Friday. After lunch went out with Henry in gondola. Left him at Genl de Horsey’s—& I went to pay visits—met Henry again on the Zattere—he left me to pay a visit to Miss Leigh Smith who lives on Zattere & was at home– She showed me her sketches wh are very good. Miss Blythe & Miss Gilbert were at home also. I went on to Mrs Brown & she was also in. I remained but a short time as the weather became overcast & I had promised to fetch Henry at the Piazza where he was waiting when I got to the Piazzetta & we went home– I saw Rita Michiel on Mr Malcolm’s balcony & I sent over to bring her to tea– Mr & Mrs Curtis also came to tea & Css Adele Michiel. Later Mme Hurtado & Idita Bentivoglio came & stayed till nearly 7 talking. Soon after the sposi Mr & Mrs Hoare arrived to stay with us. We dined at ¼ 8. Ida & I played Halma—Henry patience. Regina’s child better. | |
