17 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 17th [October 1891]. The child died last night at 11.30. I had to go to Regina & try & console her– Made her eat something & lie down & left her a little calmer. I painted all morng & got on a little with my own portrait. Mrs Browning & Mr & Mrs Story came to lunch. At 2.15 Mr Eden called for Henry, the Hoares & me & took us to Torcello in the steam launch. It was lovely day & very hot. While the rest went to see the church Mr Eden & I boiled the water & prepared tea in the shade of a hedge– We had it as soon as the others returned & then set off home—as Mr Edens men had forgotten to take lamps & we had to be home by dark. There was a splendid sunset & moon rise. When we got to the Eden’s door our gondola was waiting & took Henry & the Hoares home. I got out & walked with Carry to the Piazza to get a box to see Lago in the “Onorevole Campodarsego”– Henry & I joined Carry at the theatre & we sent out the Hoares on the canal by moonlight.
