20 October 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 20th October [1891]. Mr & Mrs Hoare left us by 9 oclock train for Paris. I went by the same train as far as Vicenza to see Cortelazzo & parted there with the Hoares. Cortelazzo met me & took me to his villa in his brougham. He is pretty well—but his wife is very ill & not likely to live a month. The attivo Angelo & his wife were well & all received me kindly. I had coffee on arriving (abt 11) & then sat talking with Cortelazzo. Paid his wife a short visit & then took a walk to see the kind of summer house Cortelazzo has built at the end of his field. It is really not ugly & Angelo was architect & builder. Cortelazzo & I dined together abt 1 & afterwards I went & sat with his wife a bit & tried to cheer her—but I fear I shall never see her again. She suffers great pain & gets very low & irritable. Cortelazzo drove me to the station to take the 5.19 train. It was a little late—I found in the train Dacre, Ola & Ruth Du Cane & Dacre’s friend & Senior partner Mr Williams who are all come to stay with us. I came home with them. We dined at 8 & went early to bed–
