2 November 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 2nd November [1891]. Painted all morning. Went to Mr Malcolm’s garden at S. Alvisi Henry & I in gondola—Ola followed in sandolo. It was bitter cold. Mr Malcolm met us at the garden & gave me a lot of plants—also some cut flowers chrysanthemums & roses. He also regaled us with old Cypress & biscuits in what Henry calls the “orgy hour”– Ruth has not yet been out since her face ached but is better & was downstairs. After tea read aloud to Henry in the studio by the fire. The wind was pretty high today & rose so in the evening that we feared our guests would hardly arrive to dine—but they came Mr & Mrs Curtis & Mr Ralph Curtis, Mr Malcolm & Mr Hodgson– We had invited several others in the evening but they were prevented by the wind except Mr Woods & Miss Wilson & Miss Peel. We took a tender leave of the Curtis who sail for India on Friday for a winter trip.
