5 November 1891 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Thursday. 5th November [1891]. A dull cold day. Breakfast in our rooms after which I wrote letters. Lunch at 12 & I sat working & talking with the Css till 3 when I took a walk in the garden with Henry. The girls drove to Palazzo Rosso. In to tea at 5. The Css told me of the terrible poverty of the present Venetian families– How they had literally nothing left their houses & properties being mortgaged to their full value– She said that the S. Samuele Mocenigo were deep in debt & that when Alvisi married our little friend Olga Mocenigo he had not a 1d but only debts– When he was fiancé he wrote to Count Pisani to order flowers roses & lilies to be sent every day to Olga. These even he did not pay & Ct Pisani had to pay for him. She says that P. Giovanelli used to say there was a curse on Venetian families. Either they died out or else what ever they put their hands to failed & they could not take care of what they had. Came in to tea at 4– Read aloud to Henry till dinner– Halma in eveng. Today being Guy Fawkes day we teased D. Antonio about it & offered to burn the Pope for his enjoyment!
