5 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 5th [December 1891]. My sister Maria arrived from England by 4.30 train this morning– Ola & Ruth went to meet her– She rested till 9 oclock breakfast & then came down quite fresh having travelled straight thro’ from London here 36 hours. She was in the company of Mrs Burr & Isabel Scobell as far as Milan & left them to sleep there coming straight thro’ herself. Ola & Ruth went off to the station at 9 to see “Grannie” Pisani off as she returned to Vescovana today. Maria & I sat all the morning together in the studio talking & working till lunch. After lunch it being such splendid weather we went out in open gondola to the Eden garden taking Maria with us & then to the Piazza where the band was playing—& home soon after four– The girls rowed in sandolo. Ida Belmondo brought her sister Aimée to tea & her husband Prince Cariati & Aimée’s eldest boy Arthur Wallenberg. We had not seen Aimée since she married at Consple her 1st husband whom she afterwards divorced on acct of his drunkenness. It appears that in Sweden divorce is easy to be had. However Aimée is now very happy with P. Cariati who is a diplomat & they have been in China & Japan ever since & have 3 children. She is very pretty & taking & as nice & fascinating as ever & we were delighted to meet again. Mme de Hurtado also came & brought a friend Mme to introduce to us—the wife of an Austrian diplomat. Mr Malcolm looking in for a few minutes. I read aloud for a short time to Henry before dinner. Ola being tired went to bed before dinner—& the rest of us retired early.
