11 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 11th December [1891]. I was still headachy & unable to work so I sent to ask if Aimée would walk with me & she & I walked from here to the Piazza to the Riva & walking up & down she told me all about her miserable 1st marriage & how drunken her husband had been—even on the 1st night they got to land after leaving Consple on their marriage—he came home drunk at 2 in the morning– She said that no one could tell how good Cariati was to her & how devoted. Poor little thing—I had not seen her from the day of her 1st unhappy marriage till I saw her here– She said that if it had not been for her boy Arthur & her father she does not think she could have lived thro’ all those unhappy times. We came home to lunch. In afternoon I went out again with Henry & we walked in the Piazza.
