20 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 20th December [1891]. Splendid weather still & frosty. Went to church in morning with Maria & the girls. She & Ola walked home. Ruth & I came in gondola & brought Ida Belmondo back to her home. Helped Maria to pack for her start home tomorrow. Lunched at 1 & at 2 went to the Lido with Henry & Maria in gondola, Ola & Ruth in sandolo we landed at the Favorita & walked by the sea shore to the Quattro Fontane where the gondolas met us & had to force their way thro’ an inch of ice. As we went along the sands Ola took photos of us all in her Kodak & as it was cold & Henry would not stand he walked on at such a pace that we had to run almost to catch him up. Such is the difference in his health since last year that he is able to do as he used before he had the influenza– We had tea Maria & I– The girls had theirs up in the kitchen with Bertha our new cook with whom they have made great friends. Adl Canevaro came to tea & later came Mr Woods. He had just come back from England and came to talk of the entertainment we are to get up for Christmas night. He suggests the “Metamorphosis”—changing one head to another by an arrangement of lights. Ida & Ct Belmondo dined with us and Henry played patience.
