21 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 21st December [1891]. Still splendid weather but cold. The glass up as high as it will go. I took a walk with Maria & we met Ola & Ruth & they joined us. We went over Rialto to Piazza & then home by iron bridge– By the time we returned it was just lunch time– Maria & Ruth finished their packing. Ida Belmondo came to bid them good bye & Ola took Ruth to the station in sandolo, Henry & I took Maria in the gondola. Mr Malcolm met us there & we saw them off by 4 o’cl train for Milan. They were both very low at going & we at losing them but like true Britons we none of us said much but put on brave faces tho’ Ruth had moments when she was nearly in tears. Henry & I went home & Ola took a turn alone in sandolo. Mr Woods & Mr Fischer came to tea to talk over the Christmas entertainment. We dined at 7.30 & had the Trios in the evening—Trombini Tirindelli & Dini. More people came to it than last time– The music was Rubinstein’s 2nd trio—one of Mendlessohn’s & an andante of Schubert. I turned over the leaves for the pianist as usual.
