25 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 25th [December 1891]. Christmas Day. Great exchange of presents in the early morning. Henry & I went to church. Ola walked there with Ida Bel. We took her home in gondola. The long hall was all cleared out for dancing by breakfast time. The papers today bring the outstanding denouement of the Pearl robbery– Mrs Osborne is the culprit! After standing a most severe cross examination & swearing & foreswearing herself—it is proved that she paid a bill with one of the £50 notes. It comes like a thunderclap to everyone & everyone pities Capt Osborne who is her chief victim—for he married her in spite of her being accused believing her innocent & now he is bound to a thief for life! The whole affair has made a great commotion—the parties being all in society & the men in the Dragoons– After luncheon Ola & I put up flowers wh I had ordered from Nini & wh came by post—also some from Florence sent me by Pss Olga Montenegro– The Belmondos came to spend the afternoon & helped me to put up the green branches in the drawing rooms wh took till tea time. We had tea in the studio and then had to dress as we were to dine at 7. Messrs Hodgson, Malcolm, Woods, Hulton, Fischer & Henley—Miss Ffoulkes, Mrs Humberston, Mrs Burr, Miss Sharp, Miss Scobell, M & Mme Wiel, Ct & Css Belmondo, Ola & our two selves made up a party of 18. Bertha gave us an excellent dinner. After dinner soon after 9 the rest of the English colony & some Germans came & there was dancing. The Velles also came. Supper was served at 12. Mr Malcolm brewed the punch. We danced again a little & it was 2 oclock as I got into bed– Our party had been small but merry—& all had gone successfully.
