29 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 29th [December 1891]. Still the weary white fog. I painted in morng. Henry could not go out so Ola & I rushed out abt 4 o’cl. At the door we met Mrs Burr just coming to see me—so we got into her gondola instead & she took us as far as Rietti’s & left us there & promising to come & lunch with us tomorrow. After looking round Rietti’s shop to try & find a frame for my portrait wh I am painting for Mr Malcolm & not finding what I wanted we resumed our walk & went over the iron bridge to go round by the Rialto home. We met Sr Trombini & he walked a little way with us– At the Rialto we met our late chaplain Mr Mereweather. He told us to beware as influenza was about again. We also heard men crying up a newspaper with news of the Patriarch of Venice. As we had no money with us we could not buy the paper & on our arrival at our own house one of our gondoliers told us the Patriarch was dead– I told Henry & he sent to enquire whether it was true & answer was brought that it was so. Baron & Bss von Hahn came to tea. Henry played patience in the eveng & I watched him. Ola practised the mandola in the hall. We all went early to bed.
