31 December 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 31st December [1891]. At last the sun shone again this morning! & the fog rolled away but only to return with redoubled force after lunch. However—we are revived & encouraged by it—& I painted away busily & got my horrid portrait finished & wrote to ask Mr Malcolm to come over & see it as it is too fresh to send to him as I intended for a new year present. I had a letter from Eda Alderson to say that my sister Kate has had a sad accident on Christmas Day– She fell while skating & has broken her thigh. I am very much upset at the news & know what a bad accident it is & how she will probably be lamed for life—& I am so far off & can do nothing for her! I wrote to her & Eda—& did not read to Henry this afternoon. Sr Wiel came to call & said his wife has got influenza– Capt. Finzi called. Ida Bel came in for a short time. M. & Mme Kirchmayr also called– We dined at 7 in order to set the servants free as tonight we let them have a supper & amuse themselves. Ola & I played duetts while Henry played patience & at 9.30 we went upstairs & I read aloud to Henry for an hour before bed time. The Patriarch still lingers tho’ his case is hopeless. We found that when we told the gondoliers on Tuesday eveng to ask if he was dead they simply went to fruiterers in the Piazza S. Polo & as they said he was dead they took their word for it! I had a lovely present fm Mr Malcolm—an elegant silver vase.
