1 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st January 1892. It was not so fine this morning as yesterday but still not so foggy as the other days. I put a few finishing touches to my portrait & Mr Malcolm came over to see it & expressed himself pleased. I put a new piece of work into a work frame. All these days Miss Jocelyn Ffoulkes has been to Henry to work at the bringing out of her translation of Morelli’s book. She came today as usual after breakfast till lunch– After lunch Henry went out walking with Ola. Ida Belmondo came to fetch me in her gondola & we went to call on Bss von Hahn. There I heard the story of the death of Mr Lyon our secy at Belgrade. He made a bet on Christmas night that he would ride to the next station faster than the train went– He went out to try it in the dark—& was found dead the next morng on the road. This is the story as it is told– The Patriarch died last night at 8. Everybody regrets him. He was so good & unselfish & had scarce eno’ left to keep him—he gave away so much to the poor. Ida & I went to the Piazza & into S. Marks which was all lighted up & the Host exposed– There was some good music going on—but it was very difficult & dangerous to get out of the church as only one small door was open at the west end. We went to call on Mrs Burr & then Ida left me at home. I found Mme Hurtado there having tea with Ola & Henry– Afterwards came in Ct & Css de Velle & their son, Hilda, Henrietta & Mr Montalba—& later Idita Hurtado. Isabel Scobell came to dine with us & Henry took her, Ola, & Hilda Montalba to the theatre to see “Asrael.” I did not care to go & stayed at home to write & go early to bed–
