2 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd January [1892]. It turns out to be untrue abt Mr Lyons’ death. He went out for his usual ride in the morng & his horse came back without him to the stables—& he was found dead on the road. I had a busy morning arranging things & tidying up. Ola, was not down at breakfast came to the studio & helped me. After lunch had a visit from old Mrs Brackett & her son, then Henry & I went out to the Eden’s garden– It was rather misty but the sun came out a little. We walked on the sacca & I got a few roses & Christmas roses. Ola did not go out, I went to see Countess Canevaro & she received then came home to tea—found Miss Hammond & Miss Eardley Wilmot with Ola. We had Isabel Scobell & Hilda Montalba to dinner at 7 & Henry took them both to the Rossini to see Carmen. I practised guitar & went early to bed– The Patriarch was embalmed yesterday & lies in state today & tomorrow– The bells of every church clanging all day long!—a terrible jangle!
