16 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 16th January [1892]. A fine day at last. I painted on my fan. Mrs Burr came up to the studio but seemed very feeble—said she woke very rheumatic. When we went down to lunch I gave her my arm to help her & she could hardly move & I thought I should never get her as far as the dining room– She had also a cold & did not seem at all well. She went home to the Pension Suisse after lunch. Edith Bronson came to call having arrived from England yesterday with the Edens. Ida Belmondo also came after lunch to go out with us– Henry took Ida in our gondola & I went with Edith in hers & we went to the public gardens & walked there & then walked by the Riva back to the Piazzetta where our gondolas met us & we came home bringing Ida Bel. with us– As soon as we got in had a visit from Ct & Css Maffei—cousins of our friend the Ambassador– Then came Mrs Eden, & then the Dss della Grazia & her girl—they have also just arrived from Austria. Mr Hodgson came to bring an address of condolence to the P. & Pss of Wales from the English here which Henry has started. Mr Hodgson is taking it round to be signed. To our astonishment in walks Mrs Browning whom we imagined to be at Florence & she was soon followed by her husband. They arrived here yesterday & are staying at the Hotel Britannia for a few days altho’ they have such a fine Palazzo here as the Rezzonico– They say the servants there are ill with influenza. Ola & I played guitar & mandola in eveng.
