20 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 20th [January 1892]. At 9 oclock Professor Carcano arrived to say he was ready to play at the service today, so I made him try over the hymns on the harmonium and explained every thing. When we went to church at 11 to the Memorial service for the Duke of Clarence I found him there & took up my seat by his side in order to tell him what moment to play. He is a capital musician & harmonized away on the instrument while people came in to take their places. The Duke of Genoa was there also Genl Billia the Genl in Command, the Adl in Command Ct Canevaro, the procurator del Rè, the consuls—& commissioners for the Sanitary conference—& a good many English residents. The burial service was read by Messrs Mereweather & Hodgson. We sang two hymns & stood while the Dead March in Saul was being played at the end & then all was over. There was still a great deal of wind blowing– Henry took me to the Pension Suisse in gondola to enquire after Mrs Burr. I found Isabel Scobell in consternation—the Dr was there & declared her to be in great danger– They had thought of a sister of Mercy with them to help nurse her– I went to Mrs Edens to see if she knew of a nurse but found she did not—so I went home– Later Miss Sharp came to say they were going to get a Sister. After lunch I went out with Henry to the Piazza for a walk. In the eveng Ola & I made cigarettes. I sent to advise Isabel to telegraph to Mr Higford that his mother has inflammation of the lungs–
