31 January 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 31st January [1892]. Went to church in morning. Lovely day. After lunch I went in gondola to the Lido with Henry & read aloud to him there & back. There was a very low tide—& a perfect calm– We landed at S. Elisabetta & walked across to the sea. I never saw such a low tide—& there were great sand banks standing up close to shore where people were digging up razor shellfish. There was a slight fog at sea—not a ripple—& water like glass & one could not see where the water ended & sky began—the fishing boats seeming suspended in air. We came home early– Mr Hulton came to tea & stayed a long time chatting. Mr Malcolm dined with us. I made cigarettes in eveng. Henry played patience.
