8 February 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th February [1892]. Wrote letters & copied Cortelazzo’s MSS in morning. Went to Mr Malcolm’s garden at S. Alvisi in afternoon. It was splendid weather. Walked there & he gave me some plants to bring home—also Ida Bel & Ola came there in sandolo. We were regaled with old Cyprus & biscuits. Came home by 5. Mrs Hulton came to see me & said she had heard that the Pss of Montenegro was taken ill last night with high fever—& on enquiry at her house was told the Dr did not know what to make of it & she is evidently very ill. It appears that she generally receives on a Sunday till dinner & again in the evening but feeling ill after dinner she put off her friends & went to bed. Yesterday Mr Brown lunched with her & then to took her to the Liceo & left her there to hear a conferenza of Carducci’s that she arrived late—the place was full & she had a chair given her in a draughty place in the doorway. As she had had influenza abt 6 weeks ago she may have been more subject to get a chill. Mme Bisozzi also came to tea, & Mr Cozzi & Bss Magnüs, Ida & Belmondo dined with us & we had our Trios to wh came the Velles, Dss della Grazia &c.
