24 February 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 24th February [1892]. Henry’s cold better but he breakfasted in bed. Ola & I practised guitar before lunch. After I went to fetch Ida Bel & we went to call on Mme Hurtado & Idita Bentivoglio & found them at home– Then on to Css Albrizzi whose day it was. A lot of people there. Came home to tea at 5. Mr Malcolm came to tea. I went to the Papadopoli ball. Mrs Eden came to fetch me at 10.30—but there was such a crowd of gondolas—the police arrangements were so bad that it was an hour before we could land at the house. The gondoliers shrieked & pushed & crowded & jostled & no gondola could reach the door. We are only 20 yards off from our house to the Papadopoli’s– Luckily the hour passed pleasantly chatting with Carrie Eden—& we got in one of the last. Css Papadopoli begged me to go into the Drawing room where the Dk of Genoa was that I might talk to him wh I did & we had a few words in English which he has a good deal forgotten. The Dss was too fatigued from Monday to be able to accompany him. At 1 a reverend looked gentleman presented himself to me saying he had orders to take me into supper & so we went to the table of the Dk who went with Css Papadopoli—Ct P. with Bss Despine (the Dss’ lady in waiting), Ct & Css Forzoni, Ct & Css Brandolin, the Prefettessa– The food was excellent a regular dinner in fact beginning with soup & ending with coffee & cigarettes. It was 2.15 when we returned to the lower outer apartment. I found Carrie Eden & we made for home. While waiting on the stairs the Dk of Genoa came down to take his departure & bid us good night.
