29 February 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 29th [February 1892]. I had a very busy morning giving out stores for the house—& then arranging the green boudoir for use—as during the cold weather we had sat in the corner red room. After lunch I went to see Ida Belmondo & arrange with her about the dress she was to wear tonight as she has been invited to sup at the D. & Dss of Genoas on their return from the charity ball. She is not invited to go till 2.30 tonight. I went out with Henry afterwards to the Piazza where the band was playing selections fm Rossini’s music as today is the centenary of his birth. Met Bss Andrian who walked with us. I went a moment to Mr Eden to say that if Carrie would go to the Charity ball tonight after the opera I would accompany her. Henry went to the V. & Murano & then called for me & we came home to tea. Mr Henley (agent of P&O Co) to bid me good bye as he is leaving Venice the Co having left the place. Idita & Mme de Hurtado came & stayed a long time talking & Ida Bel came also & sat with me while I dressed & Henry & I dined at 7 & went to Mr Malcolm’s box at the Fenice where was also Rossini music & 2 acts of Azrael. Mrs Eden was not there as she had a cold. But Edith Bronson was with Mr Eden & she came to pay me a visit. She & Mrs Bronson only arrived from Asolo at 6 in this evening. I asked Mr Malcolm to go with me to the ball. He said he was not dressed for it but he went home & came back all arrayed in evening dress. I proposed to Edith B. to go with us which she gladly accepted. Henry went home & we had only to go by another stair case into the liceo room. At that very moment the D. & Dss of Genoa came out of the theatre & passed into the Ballroom before us & we got in soon after & I found a corner to sit by the Lady Patronesses. When the Dss saw me she got up from her state chair shook hands & asked me why I did not come to the ball after midnight on Sunday. I explained that I did not run the point so fine. At 2.30 both Edith Bronson & I had had eno & came home. One of the first people I saw in the ball room was our servant Paolo looking very smart—but when he saw me he got out of my way & when I got home he opened our door & helped me out of the gondola! There were lotteries for wh tickets were being sold at the ball &c & in one room was on view a silk flag made by the ladies of Venice for the iron clad “Morosini” & the carved box made to hold it—also the illuminated vellum with the signatures of the donors. The paintings on it were by Mainella & there were allegorical figures—supposed to be portraits of Css Anina Morosini & Css Albrizzi. The Css Anina was a figure nude to the waist—a piece of impertinence wh most people would have resented—only Css Anina is so vain she does not seem to be very particular.
