2 April 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd April [1892]. Quite a hot day. Henry & I went to lunch with Mrs Browning at the Rezzonico—& met Mrs Brown, & a Scotch Lady Mrs Macdonald—& Miss Sarianna Browning. We came home at 1.30 & found an Arsenal steam launch waiting for us which had been lent us by Adl Canevaro. Henry & Ola, Mrs Hanson, Kathleen & I went in it to Mazzorbo. We landed there, walked to Burano (abt 10 minutes) & went into the lace school– We then returned to the launch which took us to Torcello– We landed & went to the Cathedral. The old arciprète who was a very cross old gentleman was in very good humour & took us over the 2 churches himself & gave Henry permission to go into the cathedral with his hat on as it struck so cold on going in he was afraid of a chill. The old priest said they seldom used the church as it was too large for the 4 families who alone remained on the island. At 5 we started back in the launch & made our tea & drank it en route– Got to the Arsenal at 6 & found the gondola their waiting for us & to home. Visit from B & Bss Andrian. Dined at 7.30 & then Henry, the Hansons & I went to the Malibran theatre to see a circus—horses—clowns & electric tricks—rather amusing. I was tired & glad to get to bed. We had a light supper in the kitchen & retired soon after 11. Ola went to bed before dinner.
