11 April 1892 — Florence
Monday. 11th [April 1892]. Countess Olga Mocenigo came to see us soon after breakfast & remained till at 12 Mr Temple Leader came to fetch us to drive us to his Castle Vincigliata. He brought a landau & a victoria. His wife’s nephew Signor Narni a nice young man accompanied him & took charge of Ola in the open carriage the rest of us being in the landau. It was a splendid day & the air stiller than yesterday. We got to Vincigliata abt 1 & then went over the castle wh is a kind of museum & hardly inhabitable. I did not go to the top of the tower as the others did but sat talking to the woman in charge of the castle & found she came from the same village as our maid Regina & knew her well. We had a cold luncheon in the banquetting hall & then went over the rest of castle– After wh we drove to Magliano to see Mr Leader’s villa near. We stopped on the way at the little lake he has had made in the old stone quarries. He took the girls across it in the punt & showed them where he takes his daily bath. Magliano is a commodious villa with a pretty garden. Henry rested there while I accompanied Mr Leader to the fattoria close by. It is an old convent & in the old refectory are rows of great oil vases stored away. We returned for Henry & at abt 6 set off to drive back to Florence—having had a most charming day. As soon as we got back to the hotel we had to dress & go off to dine with the Colnaghis. They had no party. There was only a cousin a Mr Bevan there beside ourselves & Henry played patience superintended by Katie & Sir Domenic.
