23 April 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd April [1892]. I walked to the church with Nela & Mr Thompson to try the organ as I am wanted to play at the morng service tomorrow, as Mrs Wiel was to be absent. She was at the church this morning & explained to me about the stops. I went on to Genl de Horsey’s with a note from Henry—but as they said the Genl’s secy was out & I knew he was too blind to read a note I went up with it & read it to him. It was an offer from Sir Henry Thompson to go & see him & give him an opinion on his case—for wh the poor General was too thankful & thence I walked home to luncheon– At 4 I went with Henry to Pal: Rezzonico where the Brownings were giving a little musical entertainment to a party of Toynbee Hall Professors who were out here for their Easter holidays conducted by Mr Jameson our late chaplain. An Italian lady sang & a girl of 15 from Asolo played the violin very cleverly. Trombini accompanied them on the piano. This young lady came there with her humpbacked uncle who is a profr of music & had entirely taught his little niece. Henry & I left abt 6. We did not see Mrs Browning who was not well eno’ to come downstairs. We went for a row & left some cards for Sir H. Thompson & then came in. In the evening we went to the Bronsons leaving the 2 Thompsons at home. There was music. Mr Tirindelli played.
