3 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 3rd May [1892]. Sir Henry Thompson was not well again having had another giddy fit at 5.30 this morning & he had to remain in bed for breakfast, but got up for luncheon. I went off in the morning to see Ida B. & give her a final lecture on her jealousy & she promises amendment. Henry went off to the Frari archives to work at the Duc de Rohan’s despatches before lunch. At 3 Ida Bel called for me in her sandolo & took me to the Arsenal where we were invited to play tennis with the Dss of Genoa. There was no one there when we arrived but we were shortly after joined by Cts Rucellai & Belmondo & we practised until the Dss of Genoa & Css Despine came when H.R.A. invited me to play against her & Bel: with Ct Moriondo wh I did but I did not realize who won– Afterwards she played Bel against Css Morosini & Capt. Presbitero—& when that was over she sat in a kind of tent to watch the gentlemen play & it was getting so late that I had to leave & come home. As Ninina Brandolin was leaving at the same time I brought her in the shut gondola—her own being open– I had just time to dress for 7.30 dinner. The place where we played tennis in the Arsenal was an immense shed with arches for light—but the light is bad & it is difficult to see the balls. The best players were Belmondo & Css Morosini. Lady Shrewsbury & a Capt Gladstone dined with us & in the eveng we had music. A quartett of Beethoven & one of Saint Saens. Tirindelli also played a piece of Schumann accompanied by Mlle Herrmann. Sir Hy Thompson was rather better & came to the dinner & music every now & then retiring to his room to rest.
