5 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 5th [May 1892]. Made cigarettes for Henry in the morning. Ola had nearly fainted at dinner last night and I had to get her up to bed. She did not get up this morning. At 4 o’cl I went to Css Brandolin & she took me with her & Margherita to the Arsenal to the Dss of Genoa’s tennis. When we arrived Css Morosini was playing & after a little while she asked me if I wd like to play & she & Capt. Rucellai played a set against me & her cousin Ct Morosini. We played a good match. At first my side got ahead then Css Morosini’s side caught us up & won. The bystanders began to laugh at me & say I ought to have won &c. I jokingly answered “Oh we thought we would let Css Morosini win to encourage her”—& she answered being rather nettled “like true English”– I said “yes—the generous allies of Italy.” We then played a return match & my side won. I then made way for others. The Dss of Genoa arrived abt ¼ to 6 & played against Css Morosini who never left off the whole afternoon & quite monopolized the court & did the honors of it. I had to return home at ¼ to 7 with Ninina Brandolin & left the game still going on. The Css Albrizzi & Css Valmarana were also there. Ola did not come down to dinner. Nela & Mr Thompson went out in sandolo. Very fine night after a cold day with clouds & threatened rain.
