11 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th May [1892]. Real summer weather at last. Painted all morning at Iris’. Was writing in my room after lunch when Henry came in with the startling news that poor Mr Hodgson our chaplain had this morning attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a pair of scissors. Zuccato our V. Consul had been sent for & he came to tell Henry confidentially. The poor Mr H. had not done himself much harm—but declares himself he must have been out of this mind when he did it. Yesterday morning he called to see Henry to answer a note he had had from him. H. being out he came up saw me—asked me a hurried question gave me a message for Henry & then without sitting down took leave of me & left. I was surprised as he generally stays a long time chatting. We are much distressed as we liked him & he was always kind & attentive. Henry consulted Sir H. Thompson who says it is a bad case & he will have to be looked after– Went out at 4 all of us to tea with Css Pisani– Met Css Venier & Passini. Sir Henry made several photos of the Css Pisani’s rooms & Passini arranged to come to me tomorrow to begin my portrait. We took a row as far as the Arsenal to leave cards the 2 Thompsons, Henry & I. The girls were in the sandolo. Read aloud to Henry before dinner. After dinner Henry, the girls & Mr Thompson went out in gondola. I went in sandolo to sit with Css Pisani. There was an eclipse of the moon wh we watched together & I did not get home till 12.15. The eclipse was very fine & nearly total.
