12 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 12th May [1892]. Passini came at 10 o’cl to begin to see how my portrait is to be done. He arranged to do it in my studio & took a long time settling light, pose &c—& then made a little sketch of me—& settled to return on Saty to begin seriously. After he left I painted iris till lunch. After lunch a visit from Miss Stanley Clark & Mr & Mrs & Miss Harrison with whom Miss Clark is travelling. Then Css Pisani came & brought Css Morosini Venier. The latter had never been in this house & was amused at seeing our curios. Had Turkish coffee served to them. At 4 I went to call for the Brandolins & took them to the Arsenal to the Dss of Genoa’s tennis. Henry accompanied us so far & left us there. We returned home by 7. I played 2 sets with the Dss of Genoa & 2 men & our side won– Then Css Morosini took my place. Afterwards when the Dss was resting I played with Menotti Morosini against Css Morosini & Ct Moriondo. Lost the 1st set & won the 2nd. Then we returned home as we dined at 7.30 & Css Pisani came to dinner. I played Halma with Mr Thompson– Henry played patience. Sir H. Thompson & Css Pisani talked very pleasantly about Shakespeare. The Css told him how fond she is of reading him & what a wonderful insight he had into the real Italian character—& how interesting it was for an Italian mind to read & understand his characters.
