17 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 17th May [1892]. Ola, Nela & Mr Thompson started off by the 10 o’cl train for Vescovana to spend the day with Css Pisani & to return tomorrow & so breakfasted at 8.30. I sat to Passini from 10 to 12– Henry took the Arch Episcopal party out sightseeing. At 12.30 I took Sir Henry Thompson for a walk. We only went as far as Moses Rietti & returned for lunch– Afterwards had a visit from a Honble Mrs Pepys, her daughter and sister in law an old Lady Frances Pepys who said they had met me at Sherborne Castle wh I had gone over with Merthyr. It rained a good deal today but not eno’ to keep us in. At 4 Mrs Maclagan, Sir Henry T. & I went out in sandolo. We took her to call on Mme Wiel & then went to the Eden’s garden which was laden with roses. Sir Henry & I made photos—but it was late & dark & rainy. Sir Henry & I returned in sandolo leaving Mrs Maclagan return in gondola with Henry, the Archbp & Mr Williamson for they had joined us there after their afternoon sightseeing. I read aloud to Henry both before breakfast & before dinner. Mr Malcolm dined with us. I played Halma with Mrs Maclagan & got badly beaten–
