18 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 18th May [1892]. I sat to Passini in the morning from 10 till 12. The Archbishop, Mrs Maclagan & Mr Williamson went to Padua sightseeing. Miss Lucie Holas came to make Turkish pilaf for us in the presence of Sir Henry Thompson & stayed to lunch at 1—she, Sir Henry, my husband & I. At 2 the girls & Mr Thompson returned from Vescovana bringing Mrs Maclagan from Padua– The Archbp & Mr Williamson went on to Vicenza & returned by train arriving at 6.30. The Belmondos arrived by the same train from Naples. I got a telegram from Ct Hatzfeldt yesterday announcing the engagement of his daughter Mary “Baby” to Prince Friedrich Carl Hohenlohe & to our surprise they made their appearance after lunch. We were just going off to the Eden’s garden so we carried them off with us– Just as we were starting a young man came to call & met us on the door step. He saluted Hatzfeldt & then asked him to present him to me. Hatzfeldt looked puzzled & asked his name & then presented Count [illegible word] an Austrian attaché in London who had met Nela at Beaufort Castle last year while staying with the Wimbornes. We carried him also off to the garden & there had tea—a large party—& returned abt 7. The Belmondos dined with us. I went to see them & to beg them to come, when we returned from the Edens. They all went out in gondola after dinner excepting Sir Henry Thompson who chatted with Ida Bel while I played Halma with Mrs Maclagan & was beaten but not so hollow as last night.
