20 May 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 20th May [1892]. Better but not quite recovered. Yesterday was my mother’s 80th birthday. I telegraphed congrats to her. Wrote letters in bed & got up for luncheon. The Archbishop & Mrs Maclagan started off by the 9 train for Lugano. Mr Williamson remains on. After lunch had a visit fm Mlle Cozzi, & Css Brandolin & her daughter. Hatzfeldt came at 3 & Henry took him & the fiancés to Murano to see the glass blowing. Revd Dutton came to call with an introduction from his stepmother Lady Sherborne. He seemed a very nice man. He tells me Lady S. has become an R.C. I had tea & then went out in sandolo called for Ida Belmondo & went with her to the Eden’s garden to ask for some roses. They gave me a large basket full. There were millions of roses in the garden. I never saw anything so lovely. We took a turn towards the public gardens to meet Belmondo in his sandolo & finally I transferred Ida into her own sandolo at the Piazzetta. We passed by the King of Greece’s yacht & I longed to go & see whether Pss Sophie was on board—as the papers say they are all passing thro’ Venice—but it was thought it wd not be etiquette. Hatzfeldt & the fiancés came from the Grand Hotel to stay with us this afternoon. Dined at 7.30 & we then had the Trios & I returned to my post of turning over the pages for Trombini. They played the 2nd of Rubinstein & a Mendlessohn. Mrs Curtis brought a very nice Miss Lee daughter of the American Genl of that name.
