4 June 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th [June 1892]. Packed &c. Henry & I went in gondola to the Lido after lunch. When we got to the gardens it began to blow & we became alarmed for the girls who were coming in sandolo. We had gone on before them. We soon saw them following us. Ola was rowing in the front. Nela sitting down. But Gigio & Ola rowed on bravely. When we landed at the Favorita we sent back the gondola to meet them in case of accidents but they came safely & quite dry. The Belmondos were to have also come in their sandolo but we saw nothing of them & gave them up– We walked across to the shore found a shady sheltered place & sat down to prepare the tea. Presently the Bel’s: appeared Ida quite wet thro’—as their men had not rowed so well & they had shipped some water. Coming back we brought Ida with us & the 2 girls returned in the steamer with Belmondo. The Bishop & Mrs Sandford, Mr Woods & Mr Malcolm dined with us. Mr M. took the girls out in the eveng. The Bishop was in a state of mind because nothing had been heard of the pro tem chaplain Mr Cobbold who was to have arrived today.
