19 June 1892 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 19th June [1892]. I woke with a headache & had to remain in bed. Maria came to fetch me to church & instead remained talking till 12.30. Mrs Willy & Kathleen Hanson came to lunch & also came up to talk to me– Annie Cole our late cook also came up to town to see me. Nela came to lunch to entertain the Hansons & help Henry. I got up abt 4 o’cl & went down to the drawing room. Sir Arthur Otway called. Then Sir Henry Thompson & Mr Mitchell Henry. Had a very amusing discussion between the 2 latter. Mr Henry remarked he was growing thin & his tailor had had to take in his clothes by 3 inches. Sir Henry T. flew at him & said to him “I know that tailor, I have exposed him in my book. He is a humbug! No, I will hear nothing from you. You drink hot water? Your doctor must be a humbug! There is no use in it. If you want to grow thin you must eat no fat making things & so live on your own fat.” Mr Henry answered good humouredly & jokingly—Oh I drink boiling water– No you don’t said Thompson. Yes I do at 180º– That you dont you could not– Well at 140º– Not not even that– Then very hot. Yes that may be—as hot as you can– But it is the eating of this whole meal bread that will make you thin. But I will hear nothing from you on the subject nor will I discuss it with you as I am the great authority on the subject having studied it & written on it”—& taking the brown loaf in one hand & a knife in the other he proceeded to lecture us on the results of eating that whole meal & to give us the reason & explain the result of it on the internal action in the plainest terms so that we all felt rather shy & were glad when young Arthur Du Cane came in & the conversation was changed. We had a fire in the evening the evening being wet & chilly. Dined alone.
